Finding internships on the Internet
July 24, 2007
Internships used to be about who you knew and what they could do for you, but for students today, job opportunities are just a mouse-click away.
Due to the increased interest in gaining work experience, students have had to be more creative in finding ways to market themselves to land quality internships. Likewise, companies seeking qualified students have had to evolve the process of hiring interns.
One way employers have tried to better connect to their target audience, is by using the Internet.
Companies are seeking out students by including links on their Websites with internship information and advertising open positions on student-populated Websites, such as Facebook.com.
One such company is Boeing, which includes an "Interns and Grads" page on their Website and has advertised positions on Facebook. Companies making an effort to be as technologically savvy as the students they’re looking to hire have made it easier on students and painted a better picture of the company. Through Facebook, Boeing has offered contests and message boards to attract students and allow them to communicate with the company and each other.
Some companies have even begun to pay Facebook to keep accounts with profiles full of information to educate and attract interns. (See the CollegeRecruiter.com blog article "Ernst & Young Becomes First Employer to Use Facebook")
There are also a number of other databases where students can search for jobs. Sites such as InternshipPrograms.com, InternJobs.com, QuintCareers.com and Experience.com, allow students to post resumes, search for positions, get job-hunting tips and even network with other users.
The Internet offers plenty of resources for engineering students to learn more about positions and internship programs, including the Washington Internships for Students of Engineering program, IEEE-USA student resource center and Studentjobs.gov, which lists programs and opportunities for students within the Federal government.
