Microsoft internships have a lot to offer
November 20, 2007
Interning at a major company can get you great exposure and is more than just fun and games. But sometimes it’s that too.
Every summer for a number of years, interns at Microsoft have set out to travel across Washington state in an Amazing Race-style scavenger hunt. The students spend a weekend solving complex puzzles to lead them through a series of clues set up by fellow Microsoft employees.
The game gives the students a chance to have a fun weekend off from their challenging internship positions while still showing off the problem-solving, technical skills that got them in those positions. The history of the game is documented on The Microsoft Summer Intern Game website, which details all the puzzles and solutions.
When the students are not participating in the game, they are interns at one of the country’s most well-known companies.
Microsoft interns work with groups on actual projects creating such things as Web applications, marketing plans, product prototypes, and user guides. During their 12-week stay at the company, interns get the chance to take on real-world responsibilities similar to those of full-time employees. Within an intern’s group they will have a full-time mentor to support the students and make their transition into the working world go smoothly.
Microsoft offers students paid internships and other perks such as subsidized housing, money for some utilities and housecleaning, software discounts, subsidized car rental, free bus passes, and a health club membership.
The company offers many internships across different majors and interests, apart from computer science. Although Redmond, WA and Silicon Valley CA are Microsoft’s primary locations, it offers internships around the country in North Carolina, Massachusetts, North Dakota, Texas, and Illinois.
Students can apply online at site Microsoft’s College Careers site. The Internships site also offers information about housing, travel and local attractions for potential interns. Other resources like recruiting news can be found in the Hey Genius section and students can read a Jobs Blog to get an idea of what it’s like to work at Microsoft.
