New blog sounds off
August 22, 2005
Blogs, such as this one, are typically opinion pieces, and to the extent that they convey facts, it's usually in the context that in the blogger's opinion, those facts are particularly significant.
But the format is also emerging as a medium for straight technical information, providing a convenient way for posting items that are less formal than conference papers. In addition to providing a quick and easy way for technical experts to publish, blogs provide for instant reader feedback, where readers can contest points they believe are wrong or elaborate on points they believe are important.
A nice example is SoundAnswers.net, a three-month-old effort organized by Dr. Gabriella Cerrato-Jay, technical director at MTS Systems. The blog, she said, is intended serve the growing group of engineers who need to perform sound and vibration testing. Posts thus far cover topics ranging from hearing loss to power-steering pump noise. Unlike most blogs, which offer a single voice, SoundAnswers.net carries items from a variety of experts in industry and academia.
Dr. Cerrato-Jay reported that the blog is getting 500 hits per day, with viewers spending an average of four minutes per visit, indicating they like what they see.
