ASE to mainland China?
November 30, 2006

Is the world’s largest semiconductor testing and assembly firm destined for ownership by a mainland Chinese firm? That’s a distinct possibility if the purchase of Taiwan-based Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (ASE) by the Carlyle Group goes through, according to Andrew Leonard, writing in Salon. His contention adds a new twist to controversies surrounding the potential deal.

Leonard writes that Taiwan's government prohibits Taiwanese semiconductor companies from moving their newest technology to China: “The beauty of the Carlyle deal is that if the buyout is completed, ASE will no longer be a Taiwanese company…And what's to stop a foreign buyer like Carlyle from losing interest in its new toy a few years down the line, and selling the asset to someone else, including, conceivably, a Chinese buyer?”
