Museum head emphasizes engineering
August 26, 2005
Efforts to promote more respect for science and engineering have an outspoken proponent in Ioannis Miaoulis, director and president of the Museum of Science in Boston. Writing in the Boston Globe, he says, "The United States…is losing its status as the world's technological innovator, and we will face major consequences if we do not take action." He cites dangers to the U.S. economy and security as well as a loss of control over the technologies needed to support the needs and desires of U.S. citizens. He advocates updating schools' science curriculums to advance technological literacy among children and says his museum is reexamining how best to engage children in science and engineering. He concludes by challenge parents, public officials, and businesses "to give our kids the opportunity to explore the human-made world." He is short on specific recommendations, though.
