Tektronix buyout—consolidation, or spin-offs?
October 17, 2007

The Danaher acquisition of Tektronix, announced Monday, would seem to lead to consolidation in the test industry, but in fact it might lead to spin-offs—at least, that’s the speculation by Aliza Earnshaw in Monday's Portland Business Journal.

If spin-offs do result, she writes, “that would continue the legacy of Tektronix. The 61-year-old test and measurement company, founded by Howard Vollum and Jack Murdock, has spawned dozens of other companies in the Portland area and throughout Oregon.” Companies with roots in Tektronix, she continues, include Mentor Graphics and TriQuint Semiconductor as well as investment firms OVP Venture Partners and SmartForest Ventures plus public relations firms McClenahan Bruer and Waggener Edstrom.

I'd guess more spin-offs, after seeing how Danaher has (mis)handled earlier acquisitions in the automation area.

Tek and Fluke under the same corporate roof could be interesting.

Hey Tony....you commented on Danaher mishandling the earlier acquisitions....do you have any details? Also, I personally believe that this may result in profitable several small spin-offs for Danaher....Does anyone have any details on who's who of the players in this race for Tek???...G A
