FPGA primer
March 27, 2006
Need a review of field-programmable gate arrays? The "Design and Reuse" Web site has a good one by consultant Bob Zeidman. He covers the three major architectural components--configurable logic blocks, configurable I/O blocks, and programmable interconnect--as well as clocking circuitry and analog and digital cores. In addition, he covers the three types of FPGA programmable elements (and the pros and cons of each): SRAM (which, for instance, can be fabricated using standard processes but are volatile), antifuse (which are nonvolitile and fast but not reprogrammable), and flash (which, Zeidman says, combine the best features of the other two types). He provides a helpful summary of offerings from Altera, Atmel, Lattice Semiconductor, Quicklogic, and Xilinx.
