US engineering shows strength
February 23, 2006

More on the US science gap, or lack thereof: In 2004 American colleges and universities awarded 38% more science and engineering degrees than in 1990; graduate science and engineering enrollments have jumped 22 percent in the US since their recent low in 1998; and per million people, the US graduates slightly more engineers with four-year degrees than China and three times more than India.

Those figures come from Robert J. Samuelson writing in the Washington Post (February 22, 2006, p. A15).

His conclusion? He suggests that "high-tech executives who wail about scarcities are part of the problem," and they would love to have a larger and lower-wage talent pool to choose from.
