Don’t charge batteries—change them
October 30, 2007

What’s wrong with electric cars? They’re expensive and won’t go 400 miles on a single charge. But Silicon Valley entrepreneur Shai Agassi proposes to work around those problems. As reported in the Wall Street Journal, he proposes to use small batteries that can be replaced at service centers, allowing drivers to continue on without waiting for a lengthy charging cycle. "The thinking has been, the battery is part of the car," the Journal quotes him as saying. "Actually the battery is like the new gasoline." His Palo Alto firm would own the batteries, leasing them to car owners on a subscription basis.
