Ctrl-Alt-Dell?
May 19, 2006

Does Dell need to reboot? The computer maker's stock has suffered of late as the company has ceded some market share. Some analysts have attributed problems at Dell to its loyalty to Intel, which, they suggest, has prevented Dell from taking advantage of cheaper processors from AMD.

Now the Wall Street Journal reports that Dell says it will use some AMD chips. That hard reset seems to have bumped up Dell's stock price 90 cents, or 3.8%, on the NASDAQ.

The emphasis on processor choice leaves me wondering: do customers (technical, business, or consumer) really care what processor is inside, despite Intel's advertising? Does processor choice ever have any ramifications for test-and-measurement applications?
