Design drives Chinese innovation
April 2, 2006

What do Chinese businesses see as key to a high-tech product's success? Cutting-edge design, according to an article in China Daily that came to my attention during a visit this week to Beijing. The article comments on the 2004 closing of the Beijing-based Wang Mazi Scissors Plant after 353 years of operation. According to Song Weizu, deputy secretary general of the China Industrial Design Association, "For centuries, scissors made by Wang Mazi always came in the same shape and boring black appearance." They were "high tech in older times," he adds, "but now design matters more." And cutting-edge design, the article says, is finding its way into a host of Chinese products, such as mobile phones and MP3 players. "The awakening of Chinese firms to the power of design is helping transform the country from a manufacturing hub to a design powerhouse," the article concludes.
