OS a slam-dunk for NBA star
January 26, 2007
I posted last week on Windows Vista, noting that it may be “the best version of Widows that Microsoft has produced,” but that’s not saying much. In the blog comments section, one reader said he won’t bother with the “bloatware hog," adding that Vista is yet another “inefficient and frustrating” OS “with a pretty face to hide its flaws.” Another is looking to move to Linux when Microsoft stops supporting XP.
Even long-term Windows enthusiasts are less than thrilled with Vista. In Technology Review, Erika Jonietz, a self identified “Microsoft apologist” and “not just a fan, but a champion,” from MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 on, finds Vista to be uninspiring: “Ironically, playing around with Vista for more than a month has done what years of experience and exhortations from Mac-loving friends could not: it has converted me into a Mac fan.”
So what is Microsoft doing to win over the critics? It’s enlisting NBA star LeBron James to promote Vista in television ads, which will begin airing January 30.
Now, I can see a certain logic to basketball players endorsing basketball shoes, but an operating system?
