Why do students hate science?
May 25, 2006

A column in today's New York Times tackles this question: Why do American college students hate science?
One possible answer: "…large numbers of aspiring science majors, perhaps as many as half, are turned off by unimaginative teaching and migrate to other disciplines before graduating." Consider this response: "The science establishment explains these defections as part of a natural 'weeding out.'"

If science departments think they are imaginatively employing unimaginative teaching as a valuable tool, they are way off base. The column cites the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, as an example of an institution offering a science program that keeps students from drifting off into less challenging disciplines.
