Bypassing Wi-Fi standards
September 20, 2005

Standards efforts are frequently contentious. Proponents of competing technologies vie for official approval, while some companies introduce products before any standard is promulgated. The latest dustup comes in the WLAN arena, where Airgo Networks has introduced what it calls the third generation of its "True MIMO [Multiple Input Multiple Output] chipset. The good news: the new chip purports to offer 240-Mbps, faster-than-wired-LAN speeds. The bad news, it jumps the gun on efforts to formalize IEEE 802.11n and could lead to the emergence of incompatible implementations.

Airgo's move rankles some competitors, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. In my opinion, Wi-Fi standards are great, but if Airgo and its prospective customers for the new chip what to risk noncompliance later in pursuit of better performance now, more power to them.
