Binary stars
February 8, 2006

In response to an editor's note I wrote last May, many readers commented that technical professionals in the US don't get the respect, or at least attention, afforded to entertainers. The problem of science taking second place to entertainment seems to exist in the UK as well.

In "Who needs planets when you have stars?" Guardian columnist Lucy Mangan laments the demise of the London Planetarium, which "will be renamed the Auditorium and devote itself to screenings of a show devoted to the celebrity firmament." The Milky Way will remain, she continues, but it will be reconfigured to look like the snack. "Binary stars," she concludes, shall refer only to Brad and Angelina, Britney and Kevin, etc.
