The Scrooge report
December 22, 2006

Daniel Gross at Slate, who has been tracking corporate Christmas Scrooges, has posted his report based on reader submissions.

Complaints ranged from gift cards for “insultingly small” amounts to “useless, cheap merchandise.” Gross says that a dental assistant received a $30 certificate to a very expensive clothing store owned by her employer’s wife. One company, Gross writes, “departed from its tradition of giving modest cash bonuses and instead gave out white painters' caps with the words 'Bah Humbug' stenciled in red.”

Gross concluded that “Perhaps the most Dickensian example comes from Scrooge's homeland.” He says a Grimsby, UK, company’s annual Christmas bonus consisted of a bag of potatoes. Writes Gross, “Apparently a relative of the boss owned a potato farm.”
