  • PCI: Not the future but still going

    March 19, 2007

In 1994, I asked "Where's That PCI T&M Card?" in my then print column. A year later, Paul Schreier declared "The future of buses is spelled PCI." Since then, engineers have installed many PCI-based instruments cards–data-acquisition, digital I/O, DMM, oscilloscopes, etc.–into many PC-based test systems. In fact, instrument makers still report brisk sales of PCI cards even though PXI, PCI Express, and PXI Express cards have become available. The cost of changing platforms, even those that are software compatible with existing test systems, can be high because of wiring differences.

Which bus do you specify when you develop a modular automated test application?
