  • DTV: 399 days left

    January 15, 2008

On the day I posted "DTV: 407 days to go" in this blog, Alex Beam wrote "TV viewers, lend us your rabbit ears" in The Boston Globe. Beam points our that retailers have no incentive to stock DTV-to-analog converter boxes. Instead, they’ll tell unsuspecting consumers that they need a new TV to receive the digital bradcasts on 2/17/09. Beam makes a great point.

Two years ago, I saw the upcoming debacle coming when I wrote "DTV will cause an uproar" on February 16, 2006.

As I see it, a lot of the elderly people will not understand DTV. Their idea of their analog set not working without a converter does not make sence to them. There will be many people calling their congressmen and TV stations asking for their sets to work again. This will be an interesting time for the senior citizens. A lot of these people do not understand. I have not seen a lot of information given by TV stations giving information to the public stating that analog will be shut off. I have seen little public information about converters. Stores have displayed DTV sets with non uniform specifications for the public to sift through to make a good decision about making the DTV purchase. Sales personal have little knowledge about the subject let alone being able to talk intelligently about the DTV sets themselves. This is a shame. Many people will need something else than what they really purchased. That date will be interesting once it occurs.
