Editorial call to domain experts and software vendors: How’s it going?
After ESC 2008, I wrote an article titled “Engineers to be supplanted by domain experts?” So one year on, I’m wondering—are traditional hardware and software engineers involved in embedded system design actually being supplanted by domain experts—people who understand the application but know little about the code, microcontrollers, and other components that make up a final product?
I’ll be investigating this question and reporting my findings in an upcoming EDN cover story on software for system design and test. I want to hear from you if you
• provide software or hardware that simplifies the design and test of products that incorporate embedded systems,
• are a domain expert who has successfully applied such hardware and software, or
• are an embedded system designer and have an opinion on whether you can be replaced by high-level software.
