  • You will buy compact fluorescent bulbs

    September 29, 2009

Love CFLs or hate them, and most seem to hate them, you will be buying them. The Freedonia Group predicts US customers will spend $3.28 billion on fluorescent lamps in 2013, up from $1.85 billion in 2008.  The firm writes, “The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 will effectively ban the sale of general-service incandescent lamps in 2012, and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are expected to replace most of these lamps as they burn out. Demand for CFLs will surge more than 20% annually through 2013 as consumers transition to the new technology. Long-term demand will ultimately decline, however, as CFLs last much longer than the incandescent lamps they will replace.”

If you really hate CFLs, you might consider halogen lamps, some of which will be permitted under EISA 2007. The Freedonia Group predicts sales of them in the US will rise from $870 million in 2008 to $1.2 billion in 2013. The firm notes that LEDs (attend our workshop “Designing with LEDs” October 6 in Chicago) will pose a serious threat to lamps in the years ahead. The company provides details in the $4800 report “Lamps.”
