Portable instrument tests various xDSL lines

Test & Measurement World Staff - August 1, 2012

Running under Windows CE, GAO Instruments’ Model A0010005 tests the physical-layer parameters of ADSL, ADSL2, ADSL2+, READSL (Reach-Extended ADSL), and VDSL2 lines and confirms whether the line is suitable for service. The multifunction instrument evaluates line quality, performs PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) dial-up, provides Web-page browsing, and emulates a PC and modem for testing the connection to an ISP.

The portable A0010005 also performs numerous LAN tests and functions as a digital multimeter to measure loop resistance, capacitance, insulation resistance, and voltage. It provides a maximum test distance of up to 6.5 km, while onboard memory stores test records and other data. The unit is equipped with a color TFT LCD that offers touch-screen operation and a clear display of test results. Powered by a rechargeable 7.4-V, 2400-mAh Li-ion battery, the tester can operate for up to 8 hours.
