Optical talk set communicates up to 80 km

Test & Measurement World Staff - August 31, 2012

Combining the functions of both a digital optical phone and a stabilized light source, the Model C0240001 optical talk set from GAO Instruments carries out full-duplex communications with low background noise. It operates at a wavelength of 1310 nm or 1550 nm, providing a transmission distance of up to 80 km and an output power range of –5 dBm to –7 dBm. Modulation frequencies include 270 Hz, 1 kHz, 2 kHz, and CW (continuous wave).

The talk set can be used for installation, optical testing, maintenance, and fiber-attenuation value testing in datacom, CATV, and telecom networks. Along with an FP-LD emitter and FC/PC optical connector, the Model C0240001 provides a backlit LCD and low-battery power indicator. It is powered by a rechargeable battery that offers 5 hours of continuous operation. In addition, online communication is possible when used with an optical clip-on coupler.

Price: $1199.
