Portable analyzer measures PCM characteristics

Test & Measurement World Staff - September 26, 2012

The Model A0050003 PCM (pulse code modulation) channel analyzer from GAO Comm can be used to measure the PCM voice encoding and decoding performance of digital switches, carrier-wave communication devices, and VoIP components.

Housed in a 293×195×56-mm portable package with a 5.7-in. color LCD, the instrument integrates an analog signal generator/receiver, a selective level meter, BERT, signaling generator/receiver, ring generator/identifier, dialer, DC loop circuit, balanced bridge, and reflecting bridge.

With remote control via a USB or Ethernet interface, the A005003 allows engineers to develop and design voice-channel measurement and control systems under a variety of different conditions. Basic test functions include level, variation of gain with frequency, variation of gain with input level, total distortion, idle channel noise, crosstalk, return loss, longitudinal conversion loss, and longitudinal conversion transfer loss. The A0050003 compares measured results with built-in standard ITU-T tolerance masks to indicate whether the results pass or fail. Both automatic and manual modes of operation are available.
